Forrest Gump had it wrong. Life is not a box of chocolate, it’s a kaleidoscope. In the flip of a wrist realities are shredded and the world takes on a totally new shape. This was my experience as I sat around the table with the legendary Sally Little seated on my left, and the future of women’s golf embodied in our Female Pro’s on my right.
Half a century later and the issues Sally Little had to overcome are still limiting the current generation of women’s golfers. With each unfolding story of the player’s journeys, or rather battles, to get to their current point in their careers, Little became more and more withdrawn. “I see now that the battle is far from over, much has been achieved for women in sport but we are a far cry away from the ultimate goal,” sighed Little. Indeed trailblazers like Little have moved mountains in terms of opening up pathways for women golfers to excel.
However, the Drakensburg cannot be moved in a day. We need more advocators for women golfers if we are to change the landscape of the game.
