Bertine Strauss caught up with UniMedia Pro via email from America where she is currently playing on the LPGA tour and shared some of her insights on going pro and her dream to share with young aspiring golfers.
I am from Koster in the North West province. After matric I attended the University of Texas at Austin, where I graduated with a degree in psychology and a diploma in business administration. While playing for the Longhorns I won the award for big 12 women’s golfer of the year for the 2014-2015 season. I made my professional debut at the 2015 US Women’s Open, currently I am playing in my rookie year on the LPGA tour after obtaining my card for the 2016 season via Q-school.
Earlier on in 2016 I won my first professional event on the Sunshine Ladies Tour and along with the Investec Cup it provided a great kick start to my season. Growing up I played a lot of golf at Millvale and to this day it is still my favourite course.
My parents have been a huge support system to me and I also credit a lot to my swing coach Henri Kruger, and my college coach Kate Golden. They have both been huge assets to me in my career.
Thus far I have really enjoyed playing professionally, it’s not always very glamorous on the road but the opportunity to do what you love everyday trumps the tough times. Hopefully one day I can give back to the game that has given me so much by inspiring the next generation of girls to take up the game and chase their dreams.
